DELAWARE AEROSPACE EDUCATION
In
1989, Dr. Stephanie Wright became the Director of Aerospace
Education in conjunction with the Delaware Teacher Center.
Since then, quality, aerospace educational programs and
outreach activities have reached an audience of over 300,000
in the Delaware region. The Delaware Aerospace Education
Programs build upon the state K-12 standards in science and
technology education. Currently, all 19 districts are or
have been involved in various aerospace programs with some
private and parochial school participation.
The primary purpose of the position is to communicate that aerospace education provides a highly motivating, interdisciplinary framework within which students learn about science, technology, life skills and non-traditional career choices for all young people.
CONTEXT
The Aerospace Education Department and the Delaware
AeroSpace Education Foundation (DASEF) collaborating with
other supporting agencies including the Aerospace States
Association, DE Technical & Community College, Delaware
State Parks, Department of Transportation, Delaware Space
Grant Consortium, Pinnacle Aerospace, Delaware Electric
Cooperative, Civil Air Patrol, Delaware Air & Army National
Guard, Dover Air Force Base, Delaware Rocket Club, ILC, Dover, ATK
Tactical Systems, and the American Institute of Aeronautics
and Astronautics are working to host
Delaware's statewide K - 12 Rocket Challenges and our
tenth high powered rocket launch from Cape Henlopen State
Park on Saturday, May 6, 2006.
Pinnacle Aerospace, Inc. will be launching a Smokin' Plover High Powered rocket at this year's Rockets for Schools day. Delaware Technical College will be constructing the payload to be flown aboard the rocket. The payload will send telemetry back throughout the flight as an engineering test of electronic data gathering systems.
There
will be exhibits, briefings, kites, Student Science and
Technology Payload Poster Boards as well as K-12 Rocket &
Balloon Challenges, launches and awards all day long! These
events will precede the Advanced Model Rocket and Skidmark
Launches. At 2:30 p.m., the Experts from Pinnacle Aerospace
will launch another high-powered Smokin' Plover on an
historic flight.
High Powered Rocket Challenge:
The scientific purpose of this payload is to gather
temperature data on the payload battery compartment and the
ambient temperature. This data will be used to evaluate the
performance of the lithium batteries used. Additionally,
the GPS data will be used to “track” the payload as it
descends.
K-12 Students will be challenged to:
|
|
View the launch of Delaware's sub-orbital rocket |
|
|
Learn the history of flight, rockets & the space program |
|
|
Design, construct & learn science & technology of rockets |
|
|
Enter the Best Design & Construction K - 12 Rocket Challenges |
|
|
Enter the 'Name the Payload Dart' &/or Logo Competition |
|
|
Launch completed rockets on May 7 |
Participating school teams will be working closely with AeroSpace Education.
